Is air duct cleaning worth it?

A straight answer, including the parts that cost us work. Some Mesa houses genuinely need this and some do not, and the industry has spent decades blurring the line.

What the EPA actually says

Worth starting here, because it is the thing every duct cleaning company hopes you will not look up.

The EPA's published position is that duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems, and that particle levels in homes do not necessarily rise because of dirty ducts. They do not say it is pointless. They say the health claims are unsupported.

Any company telling you this will fix your family's allergies is selling something nobody has demonstrated. We would rather put that at the top of the page and let you decide whether the real benefits justify the money.

What it genuinely does

Removes what is physically inside your ductwork. That is the entire claim, and on a lot of Mesa houses it is a substantial one.

On a system nobody has opened in thirty years, which describes a great deal of this city, that can be a considerable volume of settled dust, fiber, dander and debris, all sitting in the path of the air your system pushes into your rooms.

On a new build, it is construction material. Drywall dust, sawdust, sanding residue, insulation fiber, sometimes solid debris in a trunk line, sealed in because ducts go in before drywall and nobody cleans them before handover.

On a system with a genuine problem, rodent evidence, insect activity or a damp history, it removes the material causing it.

What it does not do

It does not fix allergies or asthma

Covered above, and not demonstrated, so we do not claim it. If indoor air quality is the actual goal, a better filter changed on schedule does more than an annual duct cleaning at a fraction of the cost. That is an argument against our own service and it is true.

It does not cut your power bill

You will see percentages quoted. They are made up. Severe blockage genuinely restricts airflow, but ordinary settled dust in a functioning system is not what drives a Mesa summer bill.

It does not replace changing your filter

The most important sentence on this page. Your filter is the system's real defense. Clean the ducts and neglect the filter and you have bought perhaps a year. If your filter is gray and sagging when we arrive, you will hear about it.

It does not fix an HVAC problem

If the upstairs never cools, if something smells every cycle, if there is water where there should not be, those are HVAC questions. Cleaning ducts to solve a condensate drain issue would be charging you for the wrong job.

Who should do it

Who should not

Being equally clear about this is the point of the page.

If your house is not new, has no smell, shows no dust at the registers, has no pets, no rodent evidence, and you change a decent filter on schedule, you can leave it. Ring us when one of those changes.

We will tell you this on the phone rather than after arriving. A call we talk you out of costs us an hour. A job we should not have taken costs you $700.

What a $49 ad is really selling

You have seen them. Here is the mechanism.

Forty-nine dollars does not cover the labor to properly clean a whole system, and it does not cover the drive. So something gives, and it is always one of two things.

The work quietly narrows. What actually gets touched is the opening few feet of every run, whatever a vacuum can pull from the register, and that was never the portion holding anything.

Or the figure climbs. Someone turns up, has a look, and announces that your particular system requires rather more than the advertisement suggested. That conversation happens after you have given up a morning and the registers are lying on the floor.

Our number is on this website and it is per opening, so you can calculate it yourself before you ring.

Questions

Is air duct cleaning worth it?

Depends entirely on the house. On a Mesa system that has never been opened in thirty years, or a new build with construction debris in the runs, yes. On a well-filtered ten-year-old system with no symptoms, probably not, and you will be told that.

What does it actually remove?

What is physically sitting in the ductwork. On an older Mesa system that is a substantial quantity of settled dust, skin cells, fabric fiber and pet dander. On a new build it is drywall dust and construction debris.

Will it lower my power bill?

Not meaningfully, and anybody quoting a percentage is inventing it. Severe blockage affects airflow, but ordinary settled dust in a working system is not what drives a Mesa summer bill.

Will it help allergies or asthma?

Not something we will claim. The evidence is not there, and a better filter changed on schedule does more for indoor air than an annual duct cleaning.

Who should skip it?

If the house is not new, there is no smell, no visible dust at the registers, no pets, no rodent evidence, and you change a decent filter on schedule, you can leave it. Come back when one of those changes.

Then why offer it?

Because the situations where it genuinely matters are real and common, particularly in a city where so much of the housing is old enough to have never had it done. Being honest about the limits is not the same as saying it is worthless.
